Picking vegetables
梅园报晓 Plum Garden News—No.21

Kindergarten / First grade
Greeting Parents,
Tomorrow will be the 100th day in school. We will be having a celebration after recess at 11:00AM. Teacher Lisa Jean will provide many activities for the students to play and work on. We will also have a variety of snacks for the children to choose from and they will use their number place mats to place 10 of each snack to make 100 pieces. The children are very excited about the celebration. Thank you Teacher Lisa Jean for taking on this project with the Plum gardeners!
Our inquiry for this week is 我家里面的人和他们的职业? / The members in my family/what are their occupations?
Julian is this week of family. We will introduce his family to the class. We will continue to introduce everyone’s families to the class and use it as part of our inquiry reference. Maya is the next week of family.
Here is a list for the family projects:
• Oscar—The project will be sent home with Oscar on Friday, 2/27 and it will be due on Monday, 3/2.
• Julian—The project will be sent home with Julian on Friday, 3/6 and it will be due on Monday, 3/9.
• Maya—The project will be sent home with Maya on Friday, 3/13 and it will be due on Monday, 3/16.
• Ethan—The project will be sent home with Ethan on Friday, 3/20 and it will be due on Monday, 3/23.

Vegetables from our garden
Do you have an old phone book? Would you like to donate your old phone book to the Plum Garden? We will use it to press flowers. This project will be the inquiry of the next theme—Plants and us.
The Plum Garden weekly subject planners are listed below.
Language: We will continue to learn new vocabularies in Lesson 5, 悄悄话 / Whispering, 子 (child), 也 (also, and, too), 雨 (rain), 悄 (quiet, sad, silent), 里 (inside), 话 (word, language, saying, speech), 说 (said). In this lesson, the students will learn different sounds from nature. For example, the sound of the leaves, swaying in the wind, birds chirping, and the sound of rain dropping. Please help your child to review their Chinese lesson at home. It would be very helpful for your child to review their reading log for 10 to 15 minutes everyday. The children will continue to learn new vocabularies from our weekly inquiry: 我家里面的人和他们的职业? / The members in my family/what are their occupations?” Last Monday, we have started to write a journal about “My beautiful family.”
Math: We are almost finished with the last section of “排顺序, 比多少 / Number order and compare the numbers.” We will continue to learn how to compare more and less in math. We will play “Birthday Party” and “Ladybug is looking for a leaf” to learn about ‘more or less’. This section is about teaching the students how to use graphics to add and subtract. They will also learn how to place same amount of objects to sub with equal numbers.
Science and Life Science: We will have an experiment with kitchen science. This will be a three weeklong science project. The inquiries of kitchen science project are:
• Little seasoning master.
• Dessert expert.
• How to storage foods?
In “Little seasoning master,” we will introduce the most common of cooking seasonings to the children. We will discover different textures, tastes, and smells of the seasonings. We will learn about how we use them in cooking. We will experiment and compare the solubility between sugar and salt.
Art: We will continue our painting project—Where do I live? This art project is divided into three parts. The children will learn how to draw their own home, garden, and neighborhood. They will learn how to combine their three paintings into one complete painting. This week the students will draw their garden. We will also be building a three-dimensional house. The children will divide into two groups; each group will use different materials to build a house.
Social Studies and PSE: We will continue to study how to call our family members in Chinese. The children will learn about the relatives from father and mother’s family have different names in Chinese. Who they are? How do you call them?
Singing: We will sing “盖房子 / Build a house” and “家 / Home.”
