Fall 2010 Adult Mandarin Class
Are you curious about life on the other side of the world?
Would you like to speak in Mandarin to Chinese business partners?
Would you like to challenge yourself to master logograms?
Would you like to chat in Mandarin with young Chinese learners you may have at home?
Here is your opportunity! Shu Ren International School will offer Adult Mandarin Chinese evening classes for Chinese language and culture lovers. This class is open to the community.
Two class levels will be taught:
Level 1 is for beginners: Become familiar with Chinese words and pronunciation, basic grammar. This class will:
1. Introduce about 350 vocabulary words in the first year of study
2. Cover basic daily dialogues with simple activities on essential topics such as greetings, dates and times, family, and shopping
3. Introduce essential grammatical structures
4. Teach Pinyin so students can read Chinese Mandarin by themselves
5. Show students how to write Chinese characters in basic stroke order
Level 2 is for students who have some knowledge of Mandarin: Begin to read and write; have more complex conversations. This class will:
1. Introduce approximately 400 more vocabulary words beyond Level 1
2. Cover topics of interest for college students or business professionals about study, work, business as well as Chinese cultural traditions
3. Focus on important linguistic structures to build and refine students’ understanding of Chinese grammar
4. Gradually introduce more formal speech and written language
The Instructor
Mr. Lei Jin received an MBA degree from Tsinghua University in China and studied education in the US. He has been a Mandarin teacher in a public school. He has implemented creative, hands-on curriculum for different grade students. In this Mandarin program, he will not only teach Chinese words and grammar but introduce Chinese history, culture and art, etc. as well to make the learning process more exciting.
Class schedule
Fall semester includes two sessions. Each session is eight weeks:
Session one from Aug. 23 to Oct.15
Session two from Oct. 18 to Dec. 17 (no classes in Nov. 22 week)
• For Level 1: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, first day of class: Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010
• For Level 2: Mondays & Wednesdays, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, first day of class: Monday, Aug. 23, 2010
Tuition and Fees
• $10 registration fee
• $15/hour, $360 per session (8 weeks)
• Students need to purchase the textbooks and other class materials
